The Levante Sur cooperative is founded with 24 farmers, its president being Ángel Pérez Sánchez
It was the first rural cooperative in Campo de Cartagena. Production is centred on lettuce and melon. The initial facilities had a warehouse area of 1600m2, plus 800m2 of cooling chambers. There was a workforce of 80 people. In the first year, production reached 8 million kilograms, with turnover of 600 million pesetas (3.6 million euros). In the year 2002, it received OPFH certification no. 0642 (the Fruit and Vegetable Producer Organisation).
